There are many reasons to visit Bogota – it’s got all the best flavors of South America, and it’s rich in culture, history, and art. No matter your budget, you’ll easily find places to stay in areas that are accessible to all the places in town you have to see, like the short term rentals in Chico, Bogota.
One of the best things you can try while you’re in the country are all the amazing, exotic fruits that are available here! Read on for some of the best fruits you should definitely give a try.
1.Lulo
This is one of the most popular fruits in the country, so you should definitely see what all the fuss is about.
It’s a small, round, bright orange fruit that’s quite tart, so you’ll see it more often as a juice drink (you’ll see many street vendors selling this as a juice).
You can buy lulo from any of the numerous markets dotting the city and prepare it yourself. Cut it open and scoop out the insides to mix with lime, water, and sugar. Add ice, and enjoy!
2. Caimito
You may have heard of star apples or purple star – that’s because when cut across the middle, the seeds make an interesting star-shaped pattern.
The seeds are inedible, but the milky white flesh of the fruit is creamy – in fact, it’s also called a milk-fruit.
3. Chontaduro
This small, red-orange palm fruit needs to be cooked to be eaten. You’ll find many street vendors selling boiled chontaduros – they taste like sweet potato, and vendors often sell them with honey, salt, or both.
Fun fact, some locals refer to it as the “national Viagra”, though there really isn’t any proof that it works as such.
4. Zapote
This round, brown or green fruit has a rough exterior and very fibrous interior – it’s not the easiest fruit to eat, but it tastes like a combination of mangoes, papayas, and melons!
5. Cherimoya
This heart-shaped green fruit is also known as a custard apple or sugar apple, and it tastes like less of an apple and more like a combination of bananas, strawberries, mangoes, and coconuts!
If that seems like a weird combination, then definitely try it out!
6. Carambolo
Another fruit nicknamed as some type of star – this time, as a star fruit due to the star shape it makes when you cut right across it.
It’s yellow and has a waxy exterior, and inside is a crisp texture that tastes like a combination of grapes and apples.
Where to get these fruits:
There are many, many places all over the city that sell fruits, from big markets to small groceries. If you want to visit one place where you’ll find all these fruits and more, head to the Plaza de Mercado de Paloquemao. Fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, cheeses, all other sorts of food and more are found both inside and outside the market. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore so you don’t miss anything!
